It is the fewest number of returnees since the MLS versus the World format started. Last year 10 players who played in 2007 were part of the 2008 game. A total of 14 players are making their first appearance in the MLS All-Star Game. The head coach of the MLS All-Star team is Dominic Kinnear. His Houston Dynamo team had the best points-per game record through June 28. He is in his fourth season with the Dynamo and led them to the MLS title in 2006 and in 2007.<o></o>

The First XI were selected in balloting that included fans, players, coaches and general managers and the media. Five members of the First XI played for the U.S. national team. Two additions were made to the MLS All-Star because Dwayne De Rosario and Guillermo Barros Schelotto will not play. De Rosario is playing with Toronto FC as they play in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday while Schelotto is hurt. Replacing them are Cuauhtémoc Blanco of the Chicago Fire and Fredy Montero of the Seattle Sounders FC. <o></o>
